SEW file

SEW is an older Janome/Elna/Kenmore format with a simple structure and bitmap previews.

What is a SEW file?

SEW is an early Janome format; it stores stitch data and simple bitmap previews. Technically simpler than JEF.

Features & use

  • Limited color info, straightforward structure.
  • Often found in legacy collections; commonly converted to JEF/VP3/DST.

Notes

  • Compatibility can be limited on modern machines/software.

Practical context

SEW files are mostly found in older embroidery collections. If a modern machine no longer supports the format directly, conversion to JEF, PES, or DST is common.

After conversion, do not stitch the file blindly. Check design size, colors, and stitch count, and run a test stitch for important projects because old preview or color data may not transfer perfectly.
