Rib Knit Fabric and Ribbing

Rib knit has alternating vertical knit and purl columns; ribbing is a resilient rib knit selected specifically for neckbands, cuffs, waistbands, and hem bands.

Rib knit is a knitted fabric with alternating columns of knit and purl stitches that form visible lengthwise ribs. The structure gives substantial crosswise stretch. Ribbing is rib knit chosen specifically for resilient edges such as neckbands, cuffs, waistbands, and hem bands.

Rib knit versus ribbing

Not every rib knit performs as ribbing. Garment-weight rib knit may be soft and fluid enough for an entire top or dress, while band and cuff ribbing usually needs stronger recovery and more body. Ribbing may be sold as open yardage, wide tubular fabric, or narrow precut cuff tubing.

Stretch and recovery are decisive: the material must expand over the head, hand, or hip and then return closely to its original shape. Fibre content and rib width influence performance but do not predict it on their own; elastane often improves recovery.

Band length and cutting direction

A band is cut shorter than the garment opening and stretched evenly while being attached. There is no universal percentage that works for every rib knit. Use the sewing instructions, opening shape, and a sample to establish a length that lies flat without gathering the main fabric.

The greatest stretch normally runs across the visible ribs and must go around the opening or body. Tubular ribbing can eliminate one or more joining seams when its circumference suits the project.

Sewing ribbing

Divide the band and opening into matching sections so the stretch is distributed consistently. Join them with an overlocker or stretch-capable machine stitch, stretching only the band—not the garment opening. A suitable ballpoint or stretch needle reduces damaged loops and skipped stitches.
