Interfacing is an internal support layer added to collars, cuffs, button bands, pocket openings, and facings. It changes stability, shape, or body without being intended as a visible outer layer. Fusible interfacing has adhesive dots that bond to the wrong side of fabric when the specified heat, pressure, and time are applied.
Fusible and sew-in interfacing
Interfacing is the broader category. Sew-in interfacing is held by stitching and construction; fusible is bonded. Sew-in types can be preferable for heat-sensitive, highly textured, coated, or otherwise difficult fabrics.
Construction also affects performance:
- Nonwoven interfacing: no regular warp-and-weft structure; available in many weights
- Woven interfacing: has a grainline that must be aligned with the garment piece
- Knit or weft-inserted interfacing: retains more movement and can complement knitted or fluid fabrics
Weight, stretch, colour, drape, and care requirements should match both the fashion fabric and the intended result. The firmest option is not automatically the best; excessive stiffness can distort an edge or change a garment’s hang.
Fusing successfully
Make a sample with the actual fabric and interfacing first. Place the adhesive side against the fabric’s wrong side, then follow that product’s instructions for iron or press temperature, moisture, pressure, and duration. Many interfacings are pressed section by section rather than ironed back and forth. Let the piece cool flat so the bond can set.
Bubbling, adhesive strike-through, or separation after laundering indicates an unsuitable pairing or fusing process.
Interfacing versus embroidery stabilizer
Embroidery stabilizer supports fabric during machine embroidery and may be torn, cut, or washed away, or remain as backing. Interfacing is a construction layer selected to shape a sewn item. Although either material may remain permanently in a project, their functions are different and they are not automatically interchangeable.
