Fabric requirements describe the length of cloth needed for a sewing project. The figure only makes sense together with fabric width: two yards at 60 inches wide provide a different usable area from two yards at 45 inches wide.
Yardage listed on a pattern
A sewing pattern usually lists requirements by size, view, and common fabric width. Lining, interfacing, ribbing, or contrast fabric appear separately. The amount is based on a corresponding cutting layout.
That figure assumes all pieces use the prescribed direction and quantity. A different fabric width cannot always be converted with a simple area calculation because the shapes may no longer nest in the same way.
What increases fabric requirements?
- a larger size or lengthened pieces
- long sleeves, full skirts, or hoods
- nap, sheen, or one-way designs that require every piece to face the same direction
- checks, stripes, or large repeats matched across seams
- allowance for shrinkage, squaring the cut ends, and mistakes
- narrower cloth or unusable selvages
Wider fabric does not always save length. A large pattern piece may prevent efficient use of the remaining width.
Calculating yardage yourself
Once all pieces are prepared, make a full-size or scaled trial layout. Mark two parallel boundaries representing usable fabric width without the selvages. Arrange pieces with correct grainline, direction, quantity, and mirroring. The occupied length plus a sensible reserve is the requirement.
For single-layer cutting, duplicate mirrored pairs and turn cut-on-fold pieces into full templates. For folded fabric, the original paper quantities are usually sufficient according to their cutting instructions.
Buying and checking
Cut yardage may not be returnable or available later from the same dye lot. Add a modest reserve when matching a repeat, altering the pattern, or expecting shrinkage. For expensive material, test the layout with scaled pieces or measure the full pattern before purchasing.
