Thread Tension

Thread tension controls the pull on top and bobbin threads and is crucial for consistent stitch quality.

Explanation

Thread tension balances the interaction of top and bobbin threads during embroidery.
Only if both tensions are correctly adjusted will the stitch be clean and even.

  • Top thread tension: adjusted on the machine
  • Bobbin thread tension: adjusted at the bobbin case

Common issues with incorrect tension

  • Too tight: thread breaks, fabric puckers, embroidery looks stiff
  • Too loose: loops, visible bobbin thread on top, uneven outlines

Practice

  • In a correct tension setting, the bobbin thread should be just slightly visible on the underside of the fabric.
  • A common test is the “drop test” or pull test on the bobbin case.
  • Specialty threads (e.g. metallic, thicker threads) often require custom tension settings.

Tip: Regularly check and fine-tune thread tension – even small changes can have a big impact on embroidery quality.
