Explanation
The embroidery needle differs from regular sewing needles by having a larger eye and a special point.
The larger eye protects the embroidery thread, while the point type is chosen depending on the fabric to ensure clean penetration.
Needle sizes
Common sizes range from 65/9 (very fine) to 90/14 (for thicker fabrics).
- Fine fabrics → smaller needle sizes
- Heavy fabrics or dense stitching → larger needle sizes
Point types
- Universal/round point: suitable for most fabrics
- Ballpoint: ideal for knits and stretch fabrics, pushes fibers aside instead of piercing them
- Sharp point: for dense or woven fabrics, ensures precise penetration
- Specialty needles: e.g. metallic needles with extra-large eyes for metallic threads
Use
Choosing the right needle size and point is key to:
- Preventing thread breaks
- Reducing skipped stitches
- Achieving clean and consistent embroidery results
Tip: Change needles regularly! Worn needles are one of the most common causes of embroidery problems.
