Organizing Cutting Files: We’re Planning a Smart Management Solution
After embroidery files and sewing patterns, we’re exploring a smart way to manage cutting files with previews, search and structured organization. Join the waitlist and tell us what matters to you.
Organizing Cutting Files – We’re Planning a Thoughtful Solution ✂️🖨️
If you work with a cutting machine, you probably know this situation:
Over time, you collect hundreds of cutting files. SVG, DXF, PNG, Studio3, plus PDF instructions. Everything ends up scattered across download folders, ZIP archives, your cutting software and sometimes multiple devices.
At some point, you start asking yourself:
“Didn’t I already buy this design? And where is it?”
We have been asking ourselves the same question.
That’s why we are currently exploring a dedicated solution for managing cutting files.
The Growing Challenge of Cutting File Collections
Cutting files are incredibly convenient. You can download them instantly, resize them and cut them on vinyl, paper or fabric whenever you need them.
But convenience quickly turns into complexity:
- 🔎 Searching too long for a specific design
- 📁 Inconsistent folder structures and file names like
design_final_2.svg - 📦 ZIP bundles with the same design in five formats
- 🔁 Designs accidentally bought twice
- 📜 Uncertainty about whether a design may be used commercially
- 💾 No clear backup, because many files only live inside the cutting software
The more designs you collect, the harder it becomes to stay organized.
A creative project should not start with file hunting.
What a Modern Cutting File Organizer Should Offer
Simply storing files is not enough. A truly useful solution would need to support the creative process.
Here is what we believe a modern cutting file management tool could provide:
- 🖼 Previews for SVG, DXF and more, without opening the file in your cutting software
- 🔎 Search across all formats by design, theme or designer
- 🗂 One design instead of five files: all formats of a design bundled together
- 🧵 Bundles that stay together, such as cutting file, matching embroidery file and instructions for an appliqué
- 🏷 Filters by material such as heat transfer vinyl, adhesive vinyl, paper or fabric
- 📝 Notes on cut settings and license terms
- ☁️ Access from any device
- 🔒 Integrated backup
The goal is simple:
Spend less time searching. Spend more time creating.
Why We’re Exploring This Now
emborado started out as a tool to organize embroidery files. Recently, we added the option to manage digital sewing patterns as well.
Sewing pattern management started exactly like this: with a waitlist and lots of feedback from the community. Your input directly shaped what we built first.
Now we keep hearing:
“I have exactly the same problem with my cutting files.”
Many makers embroider, sew and cut, which means they use all three file types and search for them in three different places.
That’s why we are seriously exploring whether to extend emborado with cutting file management.

Looking Ahead
We are currently in the concept and evaluation phase.
Our goal is not to build something quickly, but to build something meaningful and genuinely helpful.
If organizing cutting files has ever felt more complicated than it should, you are not alone.
We believe there is room for a smarter, more structured approach, and we are excited to explore it together with you.
