Purpose & Use
Spray adhesive is used in embroidery to temporarily attach fabric to stabilizer – especially when hooping is not feasible or desirable. This helps:
- Prevent hoop marks on sensitive fabrics
- Fix small or thick pieces (e.g., leather, webbing)
- Stabilize stretchy fabrics (e.g., jersey, terry cloth)
The stabilizer is hooped, and the fabric is laid onto the sprayed surface.
Less is More
A light, targeted mist is sufficient. Too much adhesive:
Tip: Spray from about 20 cm away, let it air briefly, then place fabric.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Cheaper and more flexible than self-adhesive stabilizers
- Easy to apply
- Usually washable
Cons:
- Less adhesive strength than sticky stabilizers
- Spray mist may pose health risks
- Application control varies by product
Machine Maintenance
To protect your embroidery machine from adhesive buildup:
- Wipe needle regularly with an oily cloth
- Clean bobbin case and hook weekly
- Have the machine serviced annually if used heavily
Glue buildup in the machine affects embroidery quality over time.
Alternative: Self-Adhesive Stabilizer
Those avoiding sprays can use self-adhesive stabilizers instead. They offer stronger adhesion but are more expensive and leave more residue.
