Patchwork

Patchwork is the art of sewing together different pieces of fabric, often to create quilts or decorative textiles.

Overview

Patchwork is a sewing technique in which various fabric pieces – called patches – are stitched together to create geometric or freeform patterns.
It’s commonly used for repurposing fabric scraps or combining coordinated fabric collections into a unified design.

Popular patchwork projects include:

  • Quilts
  • Pillow covers
  • Wall hangings
  • Bags, pouches, and textile accessories

Types & Techniques

There are several styles of patchwork:

  • Traditional Patchwork: Classic geometric patterns like Log Cabin or Flying Geese
  • Modern Patchwork: Freer forms, asymmetry, or minimalist designs
  • Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP): Sewing on printed paper templates for precise results
  • In-the-Hoop (ITH) Patchwork: Assembled directly in the embroidery machine, often stitched and quilted within the hoop

Machine vs. Hand Sewing

  • Patchwork can be sewn by hand or with a sewing machine
  • Alternatively, embroidery files allow patchwork to be done entirely inside the embroidery machine – see the ITH technique (In the Hoop)

Patchwork vs. Quilting

Patchwork refers to creating the decorative top layer by piecing fabrics together.
Quilting is the process of stitching this top layer to batting and backing – often with decorative stitching.

Tip: If you’re new to patchwork, try simple patterns like “Nine Patch” or “Rail Fence” – they require only straight seams and minimal cutting.
