Explanation
The bobbin is the small spool that holds the bobbin thread. Depending on the machine, it sits inside a bobbin case or directly in the hook area. During stitching, the bobbin thread interlocks with the upper thread to form each stitch.
Why the bobbin matters
An unsuitable, damaged, or incorrectly inserted bobbin can cause uneven thread tension, visible bobbin thread on the top side, thread breaks, skipped stitches, or loops on the back of the fabric.
Practical tips
- Use bobbins that match your machine model.
- Insert the bobbin in the correct direction.
- Choose evenly wound bobbin thread.
- Clean lint and thread pieces from the bobbin area regularly.
For dense designs with a high stitch count, check the bobbin before starting so the lower thread does not run out in the middle of the design.
